Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been linked with a swoop for burly striker Britt Assombalonga who was recently released by Middlesbrough in the English Championship. Steven Gerrard can now get his transfer target on a free transfer this summer having been linked with the DR Congo international many weeks ago.
Assombalonga didn’t have the best of times during the just ended English Championship season netting five times only in his 31 appearances in the competition as he failed to deliver consistently for Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock. His goal ratio during the latest Championship campaign was a far cry from his overall record of 75 goals in 221 Championship appearances over the course of his career.
Give Me Sport revealed the interest of Steven Gerrard in 28-year-old striker Assombalonga as far back as March and it was also disclosed that clubs in Belgium and France were also keen on the player.
Assombalonga would give Steven Gerrard another option in attack. The Liverpool legend already has an abundance of talent in the position though veteran striker Jermaine Defoe could leave the club this summer. Defoe has been linked with a return to England with his contract set to run out in the coming days. Ex-Boro skipper Assombalonga could be a straight swoop for the England international if he does not sign an extension with the Scottish Premiership champions.
Apart from Defoe, Gerrard also have Alfredo Morelos, Kema Roofe and Cedric Itten in his attack.
